The Cloak of Nothing: Chapter 44

Chapter 44: Blue beads? Like in the Prologue? Don’t be ridiculous.

I toss myself onto the futon after getting dressed. “Believe it or not, showering feels better when you can’t feel extreme heat or extreme cold. The water’s always how I want to be.” It’s been a pretty good day. “God! Why does it feel so good to stretch as a physical being?” I ask rhetorically. “Tomorrow, if I can learn to fly then maybe we can do cooler stuff, right? Like fly to Japan, and, maybe, have a warp spot in Tokyo? Kanti, did Aiven have any special places?”

“We shall see,” Kanti responds patiently. “Aiven had several. His most favorite, was the Eiffel Tower in France.”

“That’s so gay!” I laugh. “I almost guessed that, but I didn’t want to sound prejudice.”

“I am a divine being. I do not dwell on political correctness. A human soul is a human, a corporeal being is a corporeal being, and a physical is a physical body. All exist. All perish.”

“You must think humans are pretty ridiculous, huh?”

“No more ridiculous than the weather.”

Hmmm. What does that mean?

“It means it is trivial to ponder what you can do nothing about. Even more trivial to contemplate its absurdity—”

Holy crap! “—K-Kanti? W—W—What is that? Do you feel it?”

Kanti sighs. “Nothing of importance.”

“Yeah, right! Is this what the witching hour is?”

“Absurd.” Kanti exhales. “It would appear that your expenditure of energy has attracted an unwanted guest.” He pauses. “One worthy of the title ridiculous.”

“Guest? Like one? It feels like there are a ton of scared, angry and lonely people huddled together for warmth in a dark place.”

“Unsurprisingly, the presence has now become one,” Kanti says disdainfully. “He was testing you.”

“Did I pass?”

Two blue beads hover over me. “With flying colors, kid.”
